The 389 nose is an explosion of ripe blackberry, cassis, pepper, mocha and vanilla. The palate is generous and jammed with ripe blackberry, blackcurrant, vanilla, dark chocolate and sweet spice. This is a wine with the structure and tannin to age for 30+ years but is also beautiful in this youthful, fruit driven mode.
Bin 389 is often referred to as ‘Baby Grange’, in part because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange. First made in 1960 by the legendary Max Schubert, this was the wine that helped forge Penfolds reputation with red wine drinkers by combining the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the richness of Shiraz.
Bin 389 exemplifies the judicious balance of fruit and oak. “ Certainly not a definitive example Bin 389 of yore – this 2016 vintage release retains style yet pushes cabernet/shiraz blend boundaries … ever so deftly!”
